The Original Rescue Dog
We adopted Chance from the SPCA when just 2 years old ... 14 years ago!
Chance grew up with my kids, as well as the many daycare children that came through the doors of my Child Care Facility. With his neverending patience and tolerance, he taught all the kids how to be gentle and caring to animals. He also taught a few to walk, as they teettered around with fists full of tail or fur :) He walked beside me on dark nights and scared away the bad guys. They'll never know that he'd have gone home with them for a milkbone!
Chance has always been one of those special dogs that makes you truly believe that dogs have souls. He knew when I was sad or in pain and would glue himself to me and watch me with a deep understanding gaze. He slept with whichever family member needed him most that night...somehow he always just knew. I didn't have to train him really, he never used a leash on walks, never wrecked anything in our house, never got sick or injured. Other than a house covered in fur no matter how often I vacuumed and the garbage he got into when I forgot to latch the cupboard, he was the perfect dog.
I can't think of many family moments that didn't include the Ole Man...
We are now at the point with Chance at 16, that we are asking everyday if its time (SIGH). He is failing but still has such spirit. I'm told we'll know when the time is here, I hope they're right.

Chance went to sleep peacefully at home, assisted by our wonderful vet: Dr Nancy Holling.
He drifted off in amidst his favourites; in the back of our SUV, eatting warm roast beef and cheese strings and being stroked and massaged by his family.
He gave us 14 years of devoted love and attention.
He was part of every single one of the best family memories.
He was the first one to my side if I was ever hurt or sad.
He is the one that taught me that no matter what anyone says: Dogs have Souls!
